A GEOGRAPHY LESSON
Hampton Roads can be found right in the middle of the
Eastern sea-board of the United States. We're centrally located within 750 miles
of three-fourth of the nation's population and two-thirds of the U.S. industrial
activity. That fact, coupled with our temperate climate, means Hampton Roads not
only is an ideal location for business, but for making
a home too.
Hampton Roads is unique because it is made up of several growing cities with
economic and social bonds. For business and political purposes we are recognized
as the 27th largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA ) in the United States.
All you really need to know is that we have the quality of life here only dreamed
about in other parts of the country.
When you drive through Hampton Roads, the first thing you'll
notice is the water. There are wide expanses of water everywhere-the Chesapeake
Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, rivers, lakes and inlets. It's a beautiful sight. The
land surrounding the convergence of the Chesapeake Bay, the Elizabeth River, the
James River, and the Nansemond River is what makes up Hampton Roads.
"Roads" is a nautical term meaning a place less sheltered than a
harbor, where ships may ride at anchor. Indeed, you will see all kinds of ships
riding at anchor here. Navy aircraft carriers, commercial container ships, historic
tall ships, and privately owned sailboats all anchor off our shores.
We invite you to come visit Hampton Roads. We hope you'll
stay for a lifetime!
